David Guttenfelder

David was born in the U.S. state of Iowa and graduated with a degree in cultural anthropology in 1992. He has worked for the Associated Press for the past 12 years based in Nairobi, Kenya, Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and New Delhi, India. He is currently the AP Chief Asia Photographer based in Tokyo, Japan.
His work has earned awards from the World Press Photos, Pictures of the Year International, the National Press Photographers Association, the Overseas Press Club, the National Headliners awards, the Atlanta photojournalist seminar, and the Prix de Bayeaux.
He was named Photojournalist of the Year in 2006 by the NPPA. In 2007 he was the runner up for the POYi Newspaper Photographer of the Year award. He was short listed as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his coverage of North and South Korea, and again in 2004 for AP’s group coverage of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
David is married with two daughters.
